galeries en expositieruimtes voor actuele kunst gezamenlijk hun deuren
openstellen.

GENT MATINEES is an initiative that takes place on a number of Sundays
throughout the year, during which contemporary art galeries and exhibition
spaces located in Ghent (B) open their doors to the wide audience.

Larissa Goldston Gallery is pleased to present Reflexive, the gallery's
second solo exhibition of work by Joey Kötting. The exhibition will be on
view from December 16 through January 29. There will be an opening reception
for the artist on Thursday December 16th from 6 to 8 pm.

As the title of the exhibition suggests, Kötting's new work addresses issues
of ego, id, and self-conscious inquiry. An inhabitant of both the physical
world and cyberspace, Kötting embraces both spheres. A modern flâneur in the
post-photographic era, he captures snapshots of textual references that
evoke his place in the world. Graffiti, signage, emails and packaging are
all places from which the artist's birthday or initials can be culled.
Kötting then takes these images as reference and, eschewing his previous
photographic processes, uses "watercolor as a darkroom" to create a number
of oblique portrait paintings.

Also included in the exhibition are a series of highly-reflective monochrome
paintings. While these self-referential works evoke portraiture within the
context of the exhibition, they also convey intimations of seeing oneself
within the world.

Joey Kötting was born in England in 1966. He currently lives and works in
Los Angeles. He received his MFA from Tyler School of Art 1991 and holds a
BFA from Brighton Polytechnic. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004
and has exhibited internationally. www.larissagoldston.com

'Time is a Hard Master'

De jonge Gentse kunstenaar Manor Grunewald maakt schilderijen en studies,
tekeningen en collages. Hij werkt met krabbels en gevonden beeldmateriaal,
elementen die hij op een geheel eigen manier filtert en verwerkt. Hij volgt
daarbij een expressieve logica, die telkens resulteert in vreemde
constellaties. Zijn hybride beelden vervlechten idee en experiment, ze
verzetten zich tegen een onmiddellijke lezing van hun inhoud. De toeschouwer
wordt uitgenodigd om de associatieve afstanden met zijn verbeelding te
overbruggen.

De reeks 'Time Is A Hard Master' bestaat uit verschillende collagetekeningen
op papier. Hier gaat Grunewald de confrontatie aan met reproductie en
gebruik van bestaand beeldmateriaal. De knipsels zijn afkomstig uit
tijdschriften, reclamefolders, wetenschappelijke boeken. Door ze te
manipuleren en te confronteren met andere beelden, vervormt de originele
betekenis.

Le jeune artiste gantois Manor Grunewald propose ici une nouvelle série de
dessins collages sur papier. Suivant une logique expressive, il s'attaque
ici à la reproduction et utilisation d'images existantes. I trouve ses
images originales dans des magazines, brochures publicitaires, livres
scientifiques. En les manipulant et les confrontant à d'autres images, il
crée des nouvelles images hybrides, des nouvelles significations.
