Dear Friend, This month, four major new exhibitions are open at Tate Britain and Tate Modern. Hailed by The Guardian as "hip, cool, wildly and inventive," Chris Ofili opened last week at Tate Britain. The former Turner Prize winner's colourful paintings seek out difficult questions about the relationship between the religious and the secular, between civilization and untamed, exuberant nature. Theo Van Doesburg (labelled "the coolest cat in 20th century art" by The Telegraph), is now open at Tate Modern. It's a UK-first for the man who founded the De Stijl movement, with its simple abstraction and primary colours. Arshile Gorky also opens at Tate Modern next week. The Telegraph describe him as the "most important figure in American art before Jackson Pollock". We'd agree, and this exhibition presents evocative paintings and drawings from across Gorky's career. Later this month, Henry Moore comes to Tate Britain. Uncovering the dark and erotically charged dimensions of his work, Curator Chris Stephens brings together 150 of his stone sculptures, wood carvings, bronzes and drawings for a distinctive take on Britain's greatest sculptor.
